Here are some common questions that we get asked regularly with all the answers in laymans terms - no Podiatry jargon allowed!

Q: What is the difference between a podiatrist and a chiropodist?

A: A chiropodist is a more traditional term for nail cutting, whereas a podiatrist is a foot expert.

Q: What does a podiatrist actually do?

A: Podiatrists are foot experts, who have studied for four years at university. Their work is varied; a normal day can include nail cutting, corns, hard skin removal, surgical removal of ingrown toenails, sports injuries and biomechanical assessments.

Q: What should I expect at a podiatry appointment?

A: This will depend on what you are here to see us for. A routine “Foot MOT” is normally nails trimmed and filed, any corns or hard skin removed, any other problems addressed followed by a moisturising foot rub.  For a nail cut, its exactly what it sounds like – nails will be cut and filed.

Q. I would like to see the podiatrist but I am worried about them seeing or touching my feet?

A: This I can empathise with – before I started working for StEPS I was actually terrified of people touching my feet. One day Vicki offered to do my feet and now I can honestly say that I would never do my own feet!

Q: I am looking to have my toenail removed but I am worried about it being a painful procedure?

A: I have been lucky enough to sit in on a few nail surgeries to see exactly what happens and once your toe is numb you can’t feel a thing! Most patients actually like to watch the surgery happening. Previous patients have described the sorest part at having the injections done.

Q: I have a loved one in a care home, are you still able to visit them?

A: Of course we are! If you provide us with the Care Home details, we organise directly with the care home to find a suitable time to go and see them. 

Q: I want to buy some insoles; do I still need seen by the podiatrist?

A: We do have a policy that if patients wish to buy insoles, they should be seen by the podiatrist first to ensure they are buying the right insoles for the structure of their foot.

Q: Do I need an appointment to see the podiatrist?

A: Unfortunately, we do not have any walk in clinics due to how busy we are! Patients should have an appointment, but if you drop in, we will try our best to fit you in as soon as possible.
